Need For Childhood Cancer Research
Overall childhood cancer research is underfunded – less than 4% of the federal budget for cancer research is dedicated to childhood cancer.
Due to the lack of funding, clinical trials come to kids last and treatment is often based on adult studies, which means families are left searching for answers and kids with cancer suffer.
There remains much work to be done developing new ways to treat childhood cancer that is less toxic and reduces long-term side effects, such as memory loss and infertility.
Big Slick Impact
Children’s Mercy Kansas City has a new Children’s Mercy Research Institute (CMRI) and comprehensive cancer center serving nearly 2,000 children and families each year and participating in nearly 70 clinical trials, dedicated to advancing research for kids.
Big Slick has partnered with Children’s Mercy, donating over $21 million to support childhood cancer research and healing:
o Ensure every patient with cancer has access to whole genome sequencing and lifesaving cancer treatments.
o Becoming a world-class leader in using whole genome sequencing to determine the best course of treatment to save lives today and adding to a rich biorepository to help children for generations to come.
